Fervo Expands Cape Station to 500 MW

In a press release, Fervo Energy, a pioneer in next-generation geothermal energy, announced it has taken a major leap forward in the clean energy race by announcing a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Shell Energy North America. Under the new deal, Shell Energy will purchase 31 MW of 24/7 carbon-free geothermal power starting in 2026 to serve its retail load customers.

This agreement is more than just a milestone for Fervo—it marks the official expansion of its flagship Cape Station project in Beaver County, Utah, from 400 MW to 500 MW. Thanks to recent innovations in well design, including wider casing diameters, fiber-optic guided well spacing, and staggered bench development, Fervo can now generate more power per well without drilling additional ones. These breakthroughs not only boost efficiency but significantly improve the economics of geothermal development.

Cape Station, the world’s largest enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) project, is now fully contracted—proof of growing market demand for around-the-clock, zero-emission power. With the new Shell Energy deal joining major existing agreements with Southern California Edison and Clean Power Alliance, Fervo is delivering what the grid desperately needs: clean, firm, weather-independent energy.

As California and other states push for reliability mandates requiring non-weather-dependent, non-battery solutions, Fervo’s advanced geothermal technology is stepping into the spotlight—offering a powerful, scalable answer to the 24/7 clean energy challenge.
